Yampa River Scorecard Out Now

What is the Yampa River Scorecard Project?

The YRSP is a long-term river health monitoring and evaluation program for the Yampa River Basin that will rate the overall condition of different segments of the Yampa River and articulate results through a “scorecard.” A comprehensive long-term monitoring program has yet to exist in the Yampa Basin.

What segments are scored?

The Yampa Basin is divided up into 6 segments; Upper Yampa Segment, Steamboat Segment, Elk River Segment, Middle Yampa Segment, Lower Yampa Segment, and Dinosaur Segment.

Why is the Yampa important?

The Yampa River serves as the lifeblood for Northwest Colorado in many ways. This river, due to its limited reservoir storage, still retains a natural hydrograph that peaks during spring runoff, followed by low base flows in late summer through winter. The flooding of the Yampa’s banks provides for a habitat where unique ecosystems still thrive.

Scoring a river is no easy feat

Since the project’s beginning, our team has been spending countless hours on the river taking measurements, performing tests, logging data, and so much more. There are so many details that need to be taken into account when scoring river health!

Recommended actions that would improve river health and function are outlined in detail in the Yampa River Stewardship Program, a program designed to follow the Scorecard and connect landowners and land managers with the tools and resources necessary to tackle priority projects in a way that protects river health.
